Lavender Varieties available from Ditchling Produce

There are two specific sub varieties of Lavender available. The following stock list has been split into the separate categories for ease of browsing. Please click on the category of interest, or scroll down to view the complete list. Please be aware that not all lavenders may be available at all times, and it would always be wise to phone before hand if you are looking for a specific lavender.

Stoechas    - Originally French these lavenders are now a very popular variety and include many different variants with plenty of colour and size options.

Traditional - The typically English variety, tend to be less hardy than the Stoechas but are equally as pretty, and usually carry a heavier scent.

 

 

 

Stoechas Varieties

Papillon           Height - 50cm / 20"               Colour - Purple

With large petals forming butterfly wings above rounded flower heads, this is a neat compact plant with highly aromatic leaves.  Will require full sun and will do well in any garden soil.

 

Helmsdale        Height - 60cm / 24"               Colour - Purple

This is a compact evergreen shrub style lavender that has aromatic foliage. It flowers with a multitude of large spikes with purple flowers. Requires full sun, and will do best in well drained soil. This variety is a vigorous grower and will need trimming after flowering.

 

Madrid Blue     Height - 60cm / 24"                Colour - Blue with White Ears

Has individual flowers with large blue petals forming  butterfly wings above rounded flowering heads, and make these flowers an unusual addition to any border. The aromatic foliage also makes these an idea plant for garden seating areas. Will require full sun and will grow in any good garden soil. Also does well in garden containers, or patio planters.

Madrid White    Height - 60cm / 24"                Colour - White, with White Ears

This is identical to the Madrid White above with the exception of the flowers being completely white. The foliage and aroma are indistinguishable. Why not consider a combination of Madrid Blue and Madrid White and a group planting option for maximum fragrance.

Fathead            Height - 75cm / 30"                Colour - Purple / Deep Pink

This very popular but unusual lavender gets its name from the rounded flower heads which are deep pink in colour and topped with purple petals. This highly aromatic shrub is best planted where it can rub on adjacent bushes, or be crushed or brushed by passers be to release the heady fragrant perfume. It will nee full sun, and will thrive in any garden soil. it is quite compact and will maintain its shape well over time.

Penduncalata    Height - 50cm / 20"                Colour - Purple

This is a frost hardy variety...

 

 

Forma Leucantha    Height - 40cm / 18"          Colour - White

This is a frost hardy variety, with a prolonged flowering season of between may and September

 

Stoechas French      Height - 60cm / 24"          Colour - Purple

Small purple winged flower.

 

 

Viridis                    Height - 60cm - 24"          Colour - yellow

 Yellow flowering lavender with a flowering season between May and September

 

 

Kew Red                  Height - 40cm / 15"          Colour - Red

Red Flowering

 

 

Hidcote Dwarf         Height - 35cm / 14"            Colour - Deep Purple / Blue

Hardy

 

 

Munstead Dwarf        Height - 35cm / 14"            Colour - Deep Purple

This is a low growing lavender, that appears insignificant in any border, except for the scent. It can be used in patio areas, or in pots or containers and requires minimum maintenance. Requires full sun and well drained soil.

 

 

Vera                          Height - 80cm - 30"            Colour - Pale Blue

If you want an evergreen shrub that will give you massive coverage in the shortest time, then this is the plant for you. It is a fully hardy variety, that will provide vigorous growth, and fill any space it is placed in. To stop the plant from going straggly it should be cut back hard after flowering. Straggly plants can be cut back in March or April. Requires full sun and any good garden soil.

Lady                          Height - 35cm / 14"            Colour - Light Blue

A very unusual and delicate light colouring of these flowers make this variety desirable for any cottage garden that include other v traditional plants. Will flower from early August through to late summer, and will require cutting back when the flower go over. Requires full sun and well drained soil.

 

Hidcote Pink              Height - 50cm / 20"            Colour - Pale Pink

One of the earliest flowering lavenders, this starts producing in June and will flower till the end of July. An attractive colouring of the flowers means this variety will work well in  most borders and planters. Requires full sun, and gritty well drained soil.

 

 

Angustifolia               Height - 60cm / 24"             Colour - Pale Pink

A compact plant with silvery  leaves. Will flower mid to late summer. Will require full sun and a well drained fertile soil. Cut back flower stems in Autumn and trim foliage with shears to produce a full flower show for the following year. Do not cut into old wood.

 

Nana Alba                  Height - 60cm / 24"            Colour - White

A beautiful lavender that adorns itself with full white flowers during the late summer. Foliage is Grey Green and gives off a heady perfume when crushed or brushed. Requires Full Sun and well drained soil.

 

 

Regal Splendour        Height - 60cm / 24"              Colour - Pale Purple

Unusually, an upright variety producing flowers of a rich velvet-purple over aromatic grey green foliage. This variety is ideal for growing in containers or on the patio. Remove dead flower stems and prune in late summer for best flower shows. Plants that have been left over winter may be cut back hard in March or April. Requires full sun, and any good well drained soil.

 

Ploughman Blue        Height - 30cm / 12"              Colour - Lilac / Pale Blue

Here is a dwarf compact variety of lavender producing flowers of pale blue with unusual lilac ears. The foliage is aromatic grey green. This plant is ideal for growing on the patio or in containers. Should be pruned in late summer or in March or April. Removing dead flower stems early will promote further flowering. Requires full sun, and well drained soil.

 

Liberty                    Height - 40cm / 16"              Colour - Violet Blue

This is another very popular dwarf lavender that is compact  and produces flowers of violet blue with white ears over aromatic grey green foliage. Ideal for container growing or in containers. Remove dead flower stems as soon as possible for prolonged flowering. Requires full sun and well drained soil.

 

 

 

Traditional Varieties

 

Twickle Purple                Height - 60cm / 24"            Colour - Deep Purple

A small growing shrub with aromatic leaves and dense spikes of fragrant purple flowers. Ideal for low growing hedges. Prefers a sunny spot and will thrive in any good well drained soil. Compact in habit with long deep purple flowers.

 

Hidcote                          Height - 60cm / 24"               Colour - Lavender Blue

A small evergreen shrub producing densly packed spikes of flowered which are deep purple and blue in colour. Has aromatic foliage and is ideal for low hedge growing. Like to be in the sun, and will grow in any good well drained soil. Why not try block planting with Twickle Purple.

 

Princess Blue                   Height - 70cm / 28"                Colour - Bright Blue

This is a bushy plant with a compact neat habit. It has silvery green aromatic leaves with tall spikes of pretty deep blue flowers that are best in late summer and early autumn. can be used as medium low hedging plants, and should be positioned in full sun. Will grow in any good soil.

 

Little Lady                       Height - 45cm /18"                Colour - Sky Blue

This little gem produces masses of compact sky blue flowers on a bushy plant. Should be planted 12" apart bto form a low growing highly aromatic hedge. Should be positioned where it will be brushed to release the scent. Will need full sun and any good but well drained soil.

Royal Purple                    Height - 70cm / 28"                Colour - Deep Purple

This compact but bushy plant is covered in masses of pretty purple flowers in the late summer. Even through to early autumn the aromatic leaves with their silvery sheen are still releasing their fragrance. This bush makes a pretty hedge or can be used in borders. The flowers may be dried out and make ideal pot pourri or fragrance bags. Will grow well in full sun and any good garden soil.

Folgate                            Height - 60cm / 24"              Colour - Mid Blue

A small evergreen shrub with aromatic leaves and dense spikes of fragrant mid blue flowers. Ideal for growing as low hedge or border plant. This plant must be kept well watered in dry weather until it is well established in its new home (two years). Straggly plants may be cut back hard in March or April. Requires full sun and well drained soil.

 

Goldberg                         Height - 37cm / 14"              Colour - Lavender Blue

A beautiful compact plant producing flowers of delicate lavender blue over a superb aromatic and variegated foliage. One of the original English varieties, and not easy to obtain. Requires full sun and well drained soil.

 

Miss Katherine                   Height - 60cm / 24"              Colour - Pink

This plant will produce masses of pretty flowers which will cover the top of the bushy shape. Flowers mainly in the late summer or early Autumn. With silvery green aromatic foliage and a mass of flowers these plants make a pretty low hedging plant or would look good in any border. Required full sun and any good but well drained soil.

 

Sawyers                            Height - 30cm / 12"              Colour - Bluish Purple

A compact and low growing variety which bears bluish purple flowers throughout the summer and into early autumn. This delightful border plant with its aromatic foliage is an ideal addition to the larger containers. Should be situated near doors, or seating areas,or where it will be brushed to gain maximum benefit of the scent. Requires full sun and well drained soil.

Grosso                              Height - 80cm / 32"              Colour - Deep Blue

This is a wonderfully perfumed variety which will enhance any border. The beautiful deep lavender blue flowers are borne in profusion throughout August and September. This is a lovely tidy plant which requires minimum maintenance. Requires full sun and well drained soil.

 

Munstead                           Height - 60cm / 24"              Colour - Blue

A small evergreen shrub with aromatic leaves and dense spikes of fragrant mid blue flowers. Ideal for growing as low hedge or border plant. This plant must will produce flowers from July right through to September. Requires full sun and good well drained soil.

 

Rosea                                Height - 80cm / 32"              Colour - Lilac pink

An attractive aromatic shrub with grey green foliage on a low growing bushy shrub base. This variety is the perfect background  to whites and pinks. Flowers are a delicate Rosy pink colour and will last from early August through to September. Required full sun and well drained soil.

 

Alba                                  Height - 100cm / 40"               Colour - White

An aromatic mid height shrub which covers itself in white flowers in the late summer. Attractive silver grey foliage with long narrow leaves adorn the lower section of the shrub. Requires full sun and any good garden soil.

 

 

Imperial Gem                     Height - 75cm / 37"              Colour - Deep Blue /Purple

The beautifully fragrant powers of this traditional cottage garden shrub will cover silvery grey foliage throughout the late summer. One of the easiest lavenders to grow, and look after.  Requires full sun and any good garden soil that is well drained.
